English 201 – 080 16 February 2014 Restricted Freedom In the 19th century, women born in the United States have been denied many opportunities and rights that were strictly reserved for men. Women were expected to be timid; they were not allowed to speak for themselves or to act on their own impulses. Women should not have to demand liberty because this is a human right. A woman should have the right to do as they please without a male opinion overpowering her own voice. In the short story â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper† written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Gilman captures the heights of emotions for a wife in an oppressive marriage. Many marriages in the late 19th century were similar to the one in this story, a tyrannically imposed†¦show more content†¦Although all women were effected by men determining women’s behavior, largely middle class women suffered. Men perpetrated an ideological prison that subjected and silenced women.† This was the pressing issue for the female role in both Cho pin and Gilman. Mrs. Mallard and the woman mentally troubled were both feeling trapped in a marriage due to masculine oppression. Many women felt trapped in their marriage, as if they were equivalent to prisoners being mentally confined. Women should not submit to a male’s authority, this would be betraying her own identity and individuality. A woman cannot truly be an individual if she is always submitting to her partner. There must be compromises met that determine the outcome rather than one voice subjugating the other. Women should not have to demand equality in a marriage. It should be given- without questioning. In â€Å"The Story of an Hour† Mrs. Mallard felt trapped in a marriage without any freedom to live her life according to her own terms. Men were limiting a woman’s subjectivity by imposing their opinions on how a wife should act. The social dynamics called in the setting and time period were questionable to say the least. Similarly, in â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper† the wife had no identity because she was constantly yielding to a superior force- her husband.
